Structured packing is a type of packing that is arranged in a uniform geometric pattern in the tower and neatly stacked. It has been widely used because of its advantages such as large specific surface area, small pressure drop, uniform fluid distribution, and high mass transfer and heat transfer efficiency. The earliest developed was metal structured packing, followed by plastic structured packing, ceramic structured packing and carbon fiber structured packing.

Classification of structured packing
Structured packing can be divided into two categories according to its structural characteristics: corrugated type and non-corrugated type. The former is further divided into vertical corrugated type and horizontal corrugated type; the latter is further divided into grid type and plate type. The
most widely used structured packing is vertical corrugated packing. Vertical corrugated packing is further divided into plate corrugated type and mesh corrugated type. In the specification and model representation of corrugated packing, the numbers generally represent the specific surface area value, and the letters X and Y represent the corrugation inclination angles of 30° and 45°, respectively. For example, 400X means that the specific surface area of this corrugated packing is 400m2/m3 and the corrugation inclination angle is 30°. X-type packing has a small pressure drop; Y-type packing has better mass transfer performance.
New corrugated packing can be made of stainless steel, copper, aluminum, pure titanium, molybdenum five titanium, and other materials. It is widely used in spices, pesticides, fine chemicals, petrochemicals and other fields. Structured packing is divided into mesh, wire mesh, perforated plate, calendered perforated plate, etc.


Types and characteristics of metal structured packing Metal

Orifice plate corrugated packing is a structured packing formed by assembling large corrugations on the surface of a metal sheet. It has the characteristics of low resistance, uniform gas-liquid distribution, high efficiency, large flux, and insignificant amplification effect. It is used in negative pressure, normal pressure and pressurized operations.
Wire mesh corrugated packing is an important milestone in the development of structured packing. This type of packing is composed of corrugated wire mesh sheets arranged in an arrangement. The corrugated sheets have an inclination angle of 30° or 50°, and the directions of adjacent corrugated sheets are opposite. When filling in the tower, the upper and lower two-person tray packing is staggered and stacked at 90°. It has the advantages of high efficiency, low pressure drop and large flux. The products are BX and CY types, which are often used in vacuum distillation, normal pressure distillation and absorption processes of difficult-to-separate and heat-sensitive systems.
Puncture corrugated packing is a structured packing made by rolling out small puncture holes with high density on inclined metal sheets and then pressing them into corrugated sheets. Due to the special puncture structure on the surface, the lubrication performance of the packing is improved, and the performance of the metal wire mesh corrugated packing can be maintained.

Types and characteristics of plastic structured packing
Plastic structured packing includes honeycomb oblique tubes, straight tubes, plastic plate corrugated packing and plastic wire mesh corrugated packing.
1. Honeycomb oblique tube: This product is mainly used for water purification, sand removal and accelerated sedimentation of domestic sewage, oil separation and tailings concentration, and is an excellent water purification filler.
2. Honeycomb straight tube: This product is mainly used as a microbial carrier in contact oxidation ponds, biofilters and biorotating discs, for biochemical treatment of industrial organic wastewater or urban domestic sewage, and can also be used as filler for chemical towers, cooling tower filler, etc.
